ZonePerfect Snack Size Nutrition Bar
The ZonePerfect Snack Size Nutrition Bars are the latest product that I have tried in the long line of protein and energy bars available on the market today. This particular bar interested me due to its unique [bite-sized] nature. Most protein bars are bigger and contain more calories, so obviously this product is intended for different goals. It seemed unique to me so I figured that it was worth a try.
The nutritional content of a protein bar is another aspect of the product which I regard as being very important. As mentioned above, the ZonePerfect Snack Size Nutrition Bars are bite-sized and contain only 80 calories per bar. Overall, the total fat per bar is 2.5 grams which equals 22.5 calories from fat [although the product information page states that it is 25 calories total so it appears that they are rounding up the exact figure that I just provided]. The total carbohydrates are equal to 10 grams or 40 calories and 5 grams of protein or 20 calories. The ratio of [fat:protein:carbohydrates] = [28:22:50]. The figure I just calculated is a rough estimate based on figures given on the product information page which appear to be rounded either up or down depending on the macronutrient in question. Although the figure is rough, it more or less outlines the true nutritional breakdown of the bar. The bar is 50% carbohydrates and slightly lower in fat at 28% with 22% protein. This explains why the bar tasted as it did which I will expand on below.
I found that the ZonePerfect bars tasted much like a snack. When I was eating it, I did not notice the strong taste and aftertaste I do with some protein bars such as the Balance Bar Balance Gold Bars. Normally when I identify that taste I can usually roughly estimate the proportion of the bar which is protein as opposed to carbohydrate or fat in origin. This bar did not taste particularly protein dense and at 22% protein, this made sense. At 30% or above, the protein taste would be more noticeable. Overall, I liked the taste better than most protein bars, although I should point out that that is due to the lower protein content. You must balance factors such as taste and nutritional content [as well as others] to decide on what bar is right for you. I definitely enjoyed the taste of this bar, and it did not taste like a typical health bar.
The texture of the bar was not as hard as some of the more protein dense bars that I have tried. It was closer to some chocolate bars on the market in this respect. It was easy to eat and can be consumed in one bite due to its small size and softness of texture.
Overall, I enjoyed the ZonePerfect Snack Size Nutrition Bars. They cost $5.99 for a box of eight which works out to $0.75 per bar which is a pretty reasonable price, however, keep in mind that the bars are lower in calories than other bars and there are other protein and energy bars on the market which will provide you with more calories for your dollar. Having said that, this particular bar is suitable for other goals and for those who would prefer a lighter snack as opposed to a full protein bar. The taste and texture of the bars were both good and the nutritional content was quite acceptable in my opinion, although supplement users should be aware of the relatively lower content of protein in relation to other protein bars on the market. There are more protein dense bars available, and the ZonePerfect bars only contain 22% protein and are thus lighter in this particular area than other bars. All in all this is a good bar and I would award it an B for an overall review, only because the cost is a little less bang for my buck compared to some other bars that I have tried, and it is a little light on the protein side [although that is made up for in taste]. I would try this bar again and intend to in the future.
