ABOUT THE
DIET
The zone diet was developed by Barry Sears (Ph.D). It is a diet
based on the nutrient breakdown (40-30-30: Protein-Carb-Fats). The
goal of this diet is to regular blood sugar levels, and as a
result, maximize the body's metabolic function. The diet claims it
will not only promote fat loss, but also reduce the chances of
cardiovascular disease. It is a diet which is said to be beneficial
more externally and internally.
DIET
GUIDELINES
The Zone diet requires eating a combination of small amounts of
protein, fats and carbohydrates through vegetables in fruits which
are rich in fibre. Protein is an essential part of the diet and
should be eaten in every meal and in every snack. Carbohydraes are
to be twice the size of the protein portions. The diet is low in
overall calories, averaging about 1,000 per day.
EXERCISE
DURING THE DIET
Exercise is normally encouraged with dieting, but due to the
overall caloric restriction of the Zone diet, it is not
recommended, unless you feel you have the energy levels necessary
to do so.
ADVANTAGES
OF THE DIET
The zone diet is fairly healthy as far as diets go. It is low in
saturated fats, and throughout the diet, a beneficial amount of
fruit is consumed. The diet also works to restrict low quality food
sources such as bad carbohydrates. The diet is also not like so
many other diets that results in weight loss quick followed by
regaining the weight at the same rate. The diet will drop pounds
slowly over time, and any of these types of diets are more likely
to keep the weight off than those which drop rate very quickly. It
also promotes eating six meals a day which is excellent for the
body because it keeps blood sugar levels high by supplying constant
nutrition.
DISADVANTAGES OF THE
DIET
Unlike many other diets, the zone diet is not easy to follow. The
diet is also exact and restrictive. As a result, the temptation to
cheat on this diet is present, and that is something you would like
to avoid when seeking a diet. It is also low in whole grain and
calcium and fairly expensive (as Zone products are an essential
part of the diet and they cost more than regular food). Although
the six meals a day is good for the body, it is sometimes difficult
to follow, at least for beginners.
CONCLUSION
Like so many other diets, the weight loss on this diet is due
largely to a smaller intake of overall calories. If you have some
time, and have short term weight loss goals, however, this diet
might be for you. It is not nearly as unhealthy as some diets which
produce short term weight loss, and may get you in the habit of
eating smaller meals more frequently, which is an essential part of
proper nutrition.
