The Pritikin diet was developed by Nathan Pritikin in the 1950s.
The diet is low in fat and high in dietary
fiber. The diet is said to help prevent the onset of heart
disease.

The diet requires some work similar to calorie counting.
Throughout the diet, meals which are less than 400 calories per
pound are chosen to eat. The diet eliminates processed carbs such
as white bread, pasta, crackers, cookies. Whole grains are eaten
instead. Fruits and vegetables are
eaten instead of foods high in fat. Portion
control is not a part of the Pritikin diet.
EXERCISE

The Pritikin diet includes a minimum of one 45 minute walk per
day. The diet provides enough calories to maintain high enough
energy levels to perform such exercise.

The Pritikin diet does not restrict portion sizes, which makes it
a bit easier to follow than many other diets. It is a healthy diet,
and aside from this, will get people in the habit of eating
correctly.

The diet is restrictive in the sense that it cuts out some dairy
products as well as fat from animal products. Due to this
restriction, it may be difficult to follow, depending on what your
previous diet was like, and what foods you enjoy eating. The diet
is lacking in calcium and although
it teaches good habits, it requires a person on the diet to count
calories, which can be time consuming to do.

Unlike so many other fad diets, the Pritikin diet is actually
fairly healthy, and may even help to prevent heart disease. It is
useful to vegetarians, and also teaches good eating and lifestyle
habits to those willing to give this diet the time and patience it
requires. If your goal is long term success, this diet may be for
you!
