PowerBar Triple Threat Layered Bar Review By Matt Canning
Lately I've been trying a huge array of protein powders, weight gain powders, and protein bars and all sorts of other products to the point where I feel like I am eating and drinking all of GNC every single day! For the most part, I find that supplements are mostly all comparable but every now and then I run into one which impresses me far and away more than the others. I can honestly tell you that the PowerBar Triple Threat Layered Bar is exactly that type of product! I've tried as many protein bars as I can sink my teeth into during this past month and I FINALLY came across run that is nutritious and tastes great. The other bars were quite tasty, but just not quite as good as your average dessert. The PowerBars were the first bar I ate yet which tasted almost exactly like a candy bar. It tasted like junk food so you would never know that it was actually a pretty nutritious bar just by eating it!
Each bar contains 230 calories which to me is slightly low end for what I would hope for in a bar. Ideally, I like bars that are 300 calories or more. Couple a bar of that calorie density with with a banana and a glass of skim milk and you have a nice little bodybuilding meal in front of you! At 300 calories, you can also even eat the bar by itself and still get a decent amount of energy to carry on throughout the day. For non-bodybuilding purposes, that spike in energy would be even more important, whereas bodybuilders would probably want a little more than that. There are eight grams of fat in each bar and 10 grams of protein. The protein is a little low and there are 26 total grams of carbohydrates, 15 of those grams being from sugar. It was after looking at the nutritional information that I realized why the bar tastes so good. It is just slightly lower in protein than the average bar, and just slightly higher in carbohydrates and sugar and that equals a better taste. I shouldn't be surprised - it is almost impossible to engineer products that meet the exact nutritional demands people want and also taste fantastic. Something has to give, and it can go either way - you can opt for a little less taste but a few more grams of protein or a little more taste and a few more grams of carbohydrates and sugar. It is the same with just about every bar. Be sure to check out these other reviews of popular protein bar supplements and meal replacements which I have posted on the supplement review section of the website:
I really liked the taste of the PowerBar protein bars, but the protein content was a little lower than I would like. I don't go out of my way to avoid carbohydrates, but there were a high quantity of sugar in the bars as well. I guess you can't have it both ways! I would also check out the ISS Research Oh Yeah! Nutrition Bars if you are interested in another very delicious protein bar. So there you have it - a protein bar which tastes like junk food but also has a little less protein than you probably want in a bar. It's a tradeoff, so you have to decide what is best for you and what meets your goals. The price for the PowerBar protein bars were great though - you can get a box of 15 bars for $18.99 (see link below for details). I tried the caramel peanut flavour and loved it. I'm sure the chocolate caramel bar is just as delicious!
