Optimum Protein Diet Bars Review By Matt C.
Optimum Protein Diet Bars
Optimum Protein Diet bars make numerous claims which I will examine in more detail below:
"Enjoy A Very Low Carbohydrate Complete Protein Bar!"
The Optimum Protein Diet bars come in four different flavours which each contain 180 calories with the exception of the peanut butter flavour which contains 190 calories. The bars contain 18-19 grams of carbohydrates depending on the flavour which is a relatively low number and under 50% of the total calories found in the bar. Each bar contains 20 grams of protein which is on the high end for protein bars, especially for a protein bar which contains less than 200 calories in total. Overall, the claim of being low in carbohydrates is accurate although it would depend on the individuals. Some people dieting for bodybuilding or fitness competitions may be on an even lower carb diet and have to avoid protein bars containing any amount of carbohydrates. On the other hand, normal health and fitness enthusiasts should have no problem with the number of carbohydrates that this bar contains.
"Fuel your workouts to new levels and bring your body to it's best shape! Now you can enjoy the low-carbohydrate goodness you've come to expect from Complete Protein Diet shakes, in a convenient bar. The Complete Protein Diet Bar travels easily in a purse or gym bag and is great for low-carbohydrate dieting and in-between meal snacking. Each delicious bar supplies an abundance of quality nutrients and can be used with a number of different low-carbohydrate diet program or in place of Complete Protein Diet shakes."
This statement is true, and I agree with the comment about the stature of the bar - the bars are very small but contain enough nutrients for a light snack. I am currently bulking so I prefer slightly heavier bars in terms of total calories, but 200 calories is not too low in my opinion and will be perfect for those who are dieting or seeking to lose weight or otherwise just want a slightly lighter bar.
"All the low-carbohydrate goodness of our Complete Protein Diet meal replacement powder, in a convenient and delicious bar. With as little as 1.5 g of carbohydrates and as much as 22 g of protein per serving, The Complete Protein Diet Bar has the best protein to carb ratio of any bar on the market."
Although I am not about to verify the statement that the Complete Protein Diet bars contain the best protein to carb ratio of any bar on the market, Optimum Nutrition is one of the very best companies on the market in my opinion and has just about perfected the production of protein powders as well as it can possibly be perfected. For instance, in terms of protein powders Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein is one of my very favourite, and in terms of weight gain powders, Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass is my favourite although I have yet to try Higher Power Ultimate Mass which I imagine will be one of my favourites. I have ordered it in chocolate flavour and look forward to reviewing it. =)
If Optimum says their bars contain the best protein to carb ratio of any bar on the market, I would be inclined to believe it based on how reputable Optimum has been in the past and I have found that they are very rarely deceitful in their advertising claims. That said, I have not independently investigated their claim and therefore cannot validate it. With that in mind, I think the ratio in the bar is quite good and most health enthusiasts and bodybuilders would appreciate it.
"New! Optimum does not make a variety pack of these bars but that didn't stop us from offering one! We created a variety pack with a few of each of the four flavors in each box! Order a Bodybuilding.com Variety Pack today for only $1.00 more than our normal super low price."
I ordered the variety pack and was therefore able to order a box which contained each of the four flavours offered for the Complete Protein Diet bars which I will list below:
- Chocolate Mint
- Fudge Truffle
- Peanut Butter
- Toasted Coconut
In fact, I am currently eating a toasted coconut bar which I am enjoying. I will speak more on the taste of the bars below.
Optimum pretty well always makes products which taste excellent. I can't say the slightest negative thing about Optimum products which I have sampled so far. Most protein or health supplements have some sort of taste or aftertaste, if only a minor one, but the Optimum Diet bars were virtually devoid of an aftertaste. I will point out that like most protein bars, they did taste heavy in that you could definitely taste the high protein content contained in each bar (much like a steak tastes heavy).
I look for a number of factors in a protein bar as I have outlined above. I have nothing negative to say about the Optimum Protein Diet bars other than the fact that it is my preference to consume a bar which is slightly higher in overall calories - usually I like a bar which is 300 calories and contains about 20 grams of protein. These bars were a little light for me, but would be fine for others. I did appreciate the small stature of each bar and enjoyed each of the four flavours that I tried. My favourite flavour would likely be the "Fudge Truffle". I would recommend the variety pack for those interested in diversity of flavour, although keep in mind that it does cost an extra $1.00. That brings me to the category of cost: a box of 15 bars costs $18.49 which works out to $1.23 per bar which is a little steep in my opinion for bars which only contain 200 calories, but they are high quality bars and would be desirable for those on a diet or seeking a lighter bar. Overall, I found the Optimum Protein Diet bars to be of very high quality and rate them an A. I look forward to using them again. =)
