Now Sports Premium Whey Protein - Review by Michael S

Now Sports Premium Whey Protein

I was not expecting a miracle with Now Sports Premium Whey Protein powder but I was pleasantly surprised. The product itself contains an impressive amino acid profile that could help you get the nutrients you need to keep your body anabolic for 24 hours a day. The ingredients themselves were pretty typical. A whey protein blend containing a higher ratio of protein concentrate over protein isolates because they are cheaper due to the fact they take longer for your body to digest, this is not necessarily a bad thing depending on when you take this protein but for post-workout a higher ratio of protein isolates are key for a quick post workout protein absorption drink. It also contained fructose and L-glutamine. The fructose I guess was meant to sweeten it up, although I personally would have preferred the lowest amount of carbohydrates possible. Also the L-glutamine was to help build the amino acid profile and prevent any catabolic states of muscle loss.

As far as whey proteins go I usually have no problem taking them and no complaints. After reading this label I thought it would be more beneficial if I took this on recovery days instead of ruining my post workout recovery by just taking protein concentrates. I tried mixing 1 scoop of the Premium Whey Protein Unflavoured in orange juice because water was a terrible option due to the odd taste of the product. It did not taste bad it was not noticeable to me at all flavour wise but texture wise it was a big gummy. It really thickened the drink and made it a bit tougher to swallow. This was alright though because after training for a long time you tend to learn that a healthy product is worth putting into your body no matter how bad it tastes.

Also I now have quite a bit of experience with NOW products now...no pun intended but I’ve come to learn that they are all generally good an inexpensive. So if you are trying to save a dollar or 2 especially these days in the economy go for it. If flavour is no problem for you than I would also recommend picking it up opposed to more tolerable tasting expensive proteins. The amino acid profile mentioned earlier is also a great incentive. Having dozens of amino acids both essential and non-essential can really help most people especially those cutting to help prevent/fight any catabolic periods of training.

Overall I would recommend the product and rate it an 8 out of 10 due to its price, ingredients, and great amino acid profile. Be sure to have a measuring device when you buy this product though, seeing as it does not come with its own. Also, if you are cutting you might want to watch out for the carbohydrates in this product. Considering it has only "natural flavour" the 9 grams of sugar per serving is kind of odd in my opinion.
