REVIEW OF NOW SOY PROTEIN

NOW FOODS SOY PROTEIN (UNFLAVOURED)
"Now Soy Protein is a good vegetable source of high quality complete protein which is very low in fat."
NOW Foods Soy Protein includes 21 grams of protein. The ingredient label indicates that of that 21 grams, 90 percent of it is soy protein isolate. Also, NOW Foods Soy Protein contains 1 gram of fat, which equals 10 calories of fat.
"This product contains an excellent amino acid profile."
Unfortunately, NOW Foods Soy Protein fails to provide a chart indicating the amount of each amino acid present in it. Therefore, I'm unable to assess the accuracy of this statement.
"Soy protein products are high in phytoesterogens, which may positively support natural estrogen levels in women. Soy protein also provides beneficial proteins such as Genistein and Diadzein, which have been shown to support good health through various biochemical processes."
Talks of estrogens in conjunction with soy protein have sparked fear in males considering soy protein. The fear being that if they consume soy protein, estrogen in their body will rise. However, researchers have concluded; "Our data support an interpretation that soy beans estrogens have tissue specificity in part because of their mixed estrogen agonist and antagonist properties." "From this and other data, it seems the phyto estrogens in soy can lower cholesterol and improve heart disease risk without systemic estrogenic effects (i.e. gyno, bodyfat increases, etc.) that would normally be seen if say a bodybuilder took estrogen pills or from the conversion of certain steroids to estrogen." In other words, there is no reason to fear that soy protein will create a rise in estrogen within males.
Although NOW Foods Soy Protein's claim isn't entirely honest, I felt that it was on point in most cases. Therefore, for the claim, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein a 7.5/10.
The problem with most soy proteins, especially unflavoured ones, is that they taste terrible. Unsurprisingly, NOW Foods Soy Protein was no different. I blended 1/4 cup into 8 ounces of milk. I found that it had a very bland taste, comparable to that of flour. Therefore, for taste, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Unflavoured a 2/10.
I was pleased to discover that NOW Foods Soy Protein had good solubility. I found that it mixed into the milk very well. On the downside, I found that NOW Foods Soy Protein had a very noticeable chalky texture to it. Therefore, for solubility/texture, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein a 6.5/10.
Soy protein has demonstrated that it can be a very healthful choice. For that reason, NOW Foods Soy Protein should be no different. Therefore, for effectiveness, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein a 7.5/10.
NOW Foods Soy Protein's claim was par. The taste of NOW Foods Soy Protein was awful. Also, the texture was chalky. However, the solubility of NOW Foods Soy Protein was very good. Also, Soy protein appears to be a healthful choice, and therefore, I would expect the same of NOW Foods Soy Protein. Therefore, for an overall review, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Unflavoured a 5.9/10.
