REVIEW OF NOW SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE

NOW Sports Soy Protein Isolate
NOW FOODS SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE (UNFLAVOURED)
"NOW Soy Protein is a good vegetable source of high quality complete protein that is very low in fat and carbohydrates and contains an excellent amino acid profile."
NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate contains 1 gram of fat and less than 0.5 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Unfortunately, the amino acid profile isn't provided. Therefore, I'm unable to comment on the excellence of NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate's amino acid profile.
"Soy products, including Soy Protein, are high in phytoestrogens, which may positively support natural estrogen levels in women. Soy Protein also provides beneficial proteins such as Genistein and Diadzein, which have been shown to support good health through various biochemical processes."
Men are often fearful of even considering soy protein as an option. It's commonly believed that if they consume soy protein, the amount of estrogen in their body will rise. However, the conclusions that researchers have reached is much to the opposite. Researchers said it best when they concluded that; "Our data support an interpretation that soy beans estrogens have tissue specificity in part because of their mixed estrogen agonist and antagonist properties." "From this and other data, it seems the phyto estrogens in soy can lower cholesterol and improve heart disease risk without systemic estrogenic effects (i.e. gyno, bodyfat increases, etc.) that would normally be seen if say a bodybuilder took estrogen pills or from the conversion of certain steroids to estrogen." To put it in other words, men need not fear that soy protein will cause estrogen levels to rise within their body.
I found that NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate's claim didn't include all the information I was looking for (i.e. amino acid profile), and is near identical to the claim it posts for NOW Foods Soy Protein. However, to the contrary, I felt that it was mostly truthful. Therefore, for the claim, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate a 7/10.
I felt that the taste of NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate (Unflavoured) was bland, and thus, relatively poor. Therefore, for taste, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate (Unflavoured) a 2/10.
I found that NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate had very good solubility. However, there was more than a slight chalky texture. Therefore, for solubility/texture, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate a 7.5/10.
Soy protein can be a healthful addition to almost any diet. A high quality isolate protein only improves upon this. Therefore, it appears reasonable to assume that NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate would be a healthful decision. For effectiveness, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate an 8/10.
Interestingly, NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate has the same amount of calories as NOW Foods Soy Protein and has less protein per serving (20 grams soy protein isolate versus 21 grams in the soy protein). Unfortunately, NOW Foods Soy Protein fails to state the amount of carbohydrates that are present in the formula. Therefore, I'm unable to compare the amount of carbohydrates in the two separate formulas. However, as stated before, they both contain 90 calories, so it would appear reasonable to assume that they contain a very similar amount of carbohydrates.
When it comes to the claim, I was particularly impressed. I wasn't pleased with the taste either. Also, the texture was undesirable. On the bright side, NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate had very good solubility. Also, it appears to be an effective product for health reasons. Therefore, for an overall review, I award NOW Foods Soy Protein Isolate (Unflavoured) a 6/10.
