Nature's Science Milk Thistle
Introduction to Milk Thistle Products:
Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) is an herb that has been used for thousands of years. The herb is a tall, stocky, plant that grows fruit, and is native to the Mediterranean.
The Claim:
Nature's Science claims that milk thistle has been used almost exclusively to support liver health. It is a very powerful antioxidant 2, and as such helps to remove toxic elements from the body. When the liver is damaged by alcohol consumption, steroid usage, pollutants, or any other environmental factor, milk thistle helps to support a healthy liver. Its ability to cleanse the liver is well-documented in scientific literature. Furthermore, Nature's Science claims that everyone can benefit from supplementing with milk thistle. Populations that may benefit most from the supplementation of milk thistle include: individuals looking to supplement with powerful antioxidants and athletes looking to improve athletic performance and general health.
There is no doubt that milk thistle is a powerful antioxidant, according to available research. However, I'm not so quick to agree that milk thistle will "improve athletic performance." I mean, it's a liver detoxifier, not creatine or a stimulant such as caffeine. Therefore, that claim may be a stretch. Regardless, according to research, there is no doubt that milk thistle is a great way to improve your general health.
Unfortunately, unlike creatine and stimulants like caffeine, there is no immediately noticeable effects. Therefore, it's difficult to asses the effectiveness of milk thistle. One way of doing this would be to get your liver checked prior to taking the supplement and again upon the last days of use.
Side effects resulting from overdose can occur. These side effects include; nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and headaches. To avoid these complications it is recommended that label directions be followed at all times and consulting a physician is always a good idea.
There are numerous milk thistle products. I'd recommend going with a trustworthy brand name at a reasonable price. Just search around a bit and I'm sure you'll figure out the going-rate. There is no reason to pay a lot extra for brand name and marketing schemes. Save your money and purchase a quality no-name brand.
Overall Review:
Nature's Science Milk Thistle is a reasonably priced milk thistle product. As outline above, according to available scientific research, milk thistle is a powerful antioxidant important for maintaining a healthy liver. This general health aid is a great addition to a supplement regimen. However, I'm unsure about how this added supplement may affect your own livers ability to heal and detoxify itself over a long period. There is no scientific evidence to support this theory. However, I always believe it best to be as cautious as possible. Therefore, I recommend cycling this as you would other supplements (such as creatine), just for safety sake. Furthermore, consult your physician prior to use. To check for effectiveness, get your liver levels checked prior to and near finishing use to see what effects the supplement elicits.
