REVIEW OF MUSCLETECH NITRO-TECH HARDCORE
I have been using various protein powders and weight gain powders over a range of brand names to try to find which one is the best overall on both an absolute scale and relative to price. Personally, I am not particularly concerned with brand name or even taste and solubility for that matter since the main thing that I am interested in is nutrient breakdown and cost efficiency. Having said that, my goal is to review as many supplements as possible on here and also get the opinions of others as well. It is a good idea to review discussions in message forums to see what the general opinion is on a particular supplement that you are interested in.
I decided to try MuscleTech Nitro-Tech Hardcore because I have used MuscleTech products in the past and found that they generally always deliver high quality and good tasting products. I do find that they are expensive as a general rule, but the quality is consistently found in the vast majority of their products and depending on your perspective, they may be worth the cost.
Benefits of MuscleTech Nitro-Tech Hardcore:
When you look at the nutrient breakdown of a protein powder, I advice you to look at the total number of calories per serving and overall and also the ratio of protein to other macronutrients. In the spirit of balancing your budget in tough economic times , I highly recommend that you also look at the price, both in terms of overall nutrients per dollar and servings per dollar. If you practice doing this, eventually you will get used to it and find it relatively easy to determine at a glance.
In the case of Nitro-Tech Hardcore by MuscleTech, you can buy a four pound [4 Lbs.] containter for $49.99, which works out to approximately $12.50 per pound [Lb.]. Each serving size is one scoop and has 110 calories, of which 20 grams [80 calories] are from protein with the remaining being from fat and carbohydrates. At 64 servings per four pound container, this works out to $0.78 per serving which is a reasonable price for an elite protein product, but certainly not the cheapest on the market.
If you are seeking to balance your budget, there are cheaper protein products available, although there is a tradeoff in terms of taste, solubility, and other aspects [outlined below]. So this is an issue of individual taste and goals.
It is very important to look at the specific ingredients of a protein supplement in order to determine if it would make a good addition to your diet. Since the majority of those who purchase bodybuilding and health supplements are health conscious, a healthy breakdown of nutrients is likely what you are looking for. Here is a list of ingredients in Nitro-Tech Hardcore by MuscleTech, other than the general nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fat, and vitamins and minerals):
Protein Blend(FeaturingNano-Diffuse Whey Protein Concentrate [Providing Di, Tri-, Oligo-, And Polypeptides, And Nano-Diffused Protein], Hyper-Pure Whey Protein Isolate[Ion-Exchanged 97% Purity], Partially Hydrolyzed Whey), Maltodextrin, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Carboxymethylcellulose, Soy Lecithin, Citric Acid, Aspartame, Acesulfame-Potassium, FD&C Red No. 40.
As you can see, Nitro-Tech contains both artificial flavours, as well as aspartame. Some health conscious individuals will wish to avoid both of them, although artificial flavouring is in virtually everything and very difficult to avoid. As for aspartame, while I generally avoid it, I must regard my decision as being somewhat irrational because in decades of research, I have yet to see any convincing evidence that it is any worse than any number of other artificial sweeteners. Having said that, plain sugar has been around for far longer and we are quite aware of the health risks associated with sugar consumption, so I don't know why more supplement companies don't use it as an ingredient. I think the reason for that is because they are selling out to their audience in a way as people would be less likely to purchase a supplement if it contained sugar. Although it should be noted that each serving of Nitro-Tech Hardcore does contain two grams of sugar, but MuscleTech [as well as other supplement companies] tend to limit their quantity of sugar in lieu of other sweeteners. I think this has more to do with successful marketing than actual health benefits. I do prefer sugar over artificial sweeteners because as I previously mentioned, we are more aware of the effects of sugars than the more recently developed artificial sweeteners.
I consumed my Nitro-Tech Hardcore shake simply in a glass with milk. I normally use skim milk, although I occasionally use 2% milk. I pour the milk into the glass first and then my serving of Nitro-Tech Hardcore powder. I mix it with a spoon until it is ready to serve. I found that the Nitro-Tech Hardcore shakes did mix well, although not to the same degree as Syntha-6 by BSN mixed. I consider BSN's afformentioned product to be the yardstick for which to measure solubility and using Syntha-6 as a comparison rated 10/10, I would thus rate Nitro-Tech Hardcore to be approximately 7.5/10. It mixed well, but it was not vastly superior to the average shake I consume, and noticeably below Syntha-6 in this area.
Nitro-Tech Hardcore [chocolate] was absolutely delicious! Even better than I recall regular Nitro-Tech shakes to be, although I found them to be excellent as well. Indeed, the shakes are much like a treat, yet not too sweet like some gainer shakes are, but not as bland as some normal whey protein powders are. All in all, I would definitely consider the taste of Nitro-Tech to be excellent and award it a 9.5/10. Keep in mind that Nitro-Tech Hardcore comes in a variety of flavours as listed below:
- Banana Cream
- Cookies & Cream
- Strawberry Banana
- Triple Chocolate Milkshake
I usually prefer chocolate flavours although I would be willing to give the others a try.
MuscleTech's Nitro-Tech Hardcore tasted very good and had a nutrient breakdown that I appreciated. However, it must be pointed out that it is more expensive than other protein products and is not really in the same league as your average protein in terms of quality [and advertising] and this is reflected in the end user cost. Thus, if you are willing to spend a little more money on a higher quality product, I would rate Nitro-Tech Hardcore 9/10. On the other hand, if you have a budget which you are trying to stretch and need to limit your expenditures, I would rate it a 7/10. For me personally, I would rather purchase a less expensive protein supplement which has roughly the same nutritional breakdown yet does not mix as well or taste as good, but costs less per serving. This is of course a personal choice based on your individual needs, budget, and preferences. All in all, I regard this as a very good product.
