Thanks for a wonderful review! I'm so glad you enjoyed the DVD and I'm pleased that through your words, others will now get the news of Raising The Bar.
I had to laugh a bit when you said that things worked out "a little too well" in terms of the story of RTB. You are absolutely right! I had an independent filmmaker swear to me that he thought the contest day drama was scripted. I assure you NOTHING was staged. That was exactly how it went down. My objective was to be as truthful as possible no matter what happened. If Dave and Jenn had not won the show then the DVD would have been about the pain and disappointment of professional bodybuilding, instead of the triumphs.
* You are also right when you say that no DVD will show the reality of steroid use in bodybuilding. That is because no one will speak on camera about the subject! I realized early on that there would be a big hole in my documentary if I didn't discuss steroids. But time after time people would run scared or ask me to turn off my camera if the subject was brought up.
Once again, thanks so much for taking the time to review our doc. I will be sure to credit you properly if we use excerpts from it.
Comments by Matt Canning
I'm still frankly amazed to learn that this DVD was "natural" so to speak, and that it wasn't preplanned or staged in any way. That is quite amazing given how well everything worked out! They say that truth is stranger than fiction - or in this case, more dramatic and perfect than any fictional piece could have been. In any case, I remain impressed by the quality of this DVD. It is a great piece of bodybuilding cinema and I highly recommend it.
On the topic of steroids - steroids are a VERY significant part of the pro ranks in bodybuilding, and even the top amateur ranks. In fact, anybody who turns pro will have been well beyond the muscularity their body can hold naturally. What I mean is this: EVERY gram of muscle gained in the pro ranks is steroid mediated. A pro could not gain so much as a single GRAM of muscle mass without steroids. So don't believe the bullshit pros tell you when they say roids are not a significant part of the picture. They only say that in fear that you will downplay the time they spend in the gym if they didn't. Of course, in reality, they could train like koala bears and still make amazing gains on the stacks they are on. Don't buy the hype - it isn't the supplements making them that big.
Although I would love to see a bodybuilding documentary in depth that covers juice (and essentially a huge part of what bodybuilding is), I highly doubt that will ever happen - and Mike's comments show that.
