REVIEW OF MET-RX BIG 100 COLOSSAL BARS
As I have mentioned before on here, my goal is to review as many different supplements as possible, and in particular, review as many different protein bars as I can. Today I decided to review the Big 100 Colossal Bars. The bar comes in four flavours: Crispy Apple Pie, Peanut Butter Caramel Crunch, Peanut Butter Pretzel, and Super Cookie Crunch. I tried two of these flavours which were the Crispy Apple Pie and Super Cookie Crunch flavours. I will begin my review by going over some of the product claims below and then review the product in terms of taste, nutritional content, and price. I will follow this up with an overall review where I will review the bar based on the combination of all of these attributes.
"New from MET-Rx, the BIG 100 Colossal is sure to satify your appetite with 31 to 32 grams of Metamyosyn Protein."
31-32 grams of protein is quite a bit of protein and perhaps just slightly more than I would expect in a protein bar. Typically, I hope a protein bar contains around 20-25 grams of protein, although slightly more than that is not a bad thing either. My concern with protein is that consuming too much would simply be inefficient as the body can only process a certain amount of protein per sitting and at 31-32 grams of protein in one bar, I think some of this protein content would likely go to waste, although the first 25 grams or so would be utilized by the body.
"This crunchy bar is loaded with chocolate chunks and peanuts, dipped in a dark chocolate coating on three sides, and topped with caramel."
I enjoyed both of the flavours of the Big 100 Colossal Bar that I tried and I will be happy to try this product again in the future. The pleasant description of the bar's contents listed above is accurate and I think most people will enjoy this aspect of the bar.
"Great as a meal replacement bar or for adding extra fuel to growing muscles. This bar is one taste pleaser! Big 100 Colossal Bars are the Huge new meal replacement bars to take the place of the old Big 100 Bars."
I would agree that this bar can be used to add extra fuel to growing muscles and I would definitely include this as a post-workout protein source if desired. I never tried the old Big 100 bars so I am unable to comment on how the new version compares to that one.
"These bars are giant and filled with all the goodies, peanut butter, chocolate, a carmel covered top, and a whopping 31 to 32 grams of protein!"
I would agree with this statement although I believe the 31-32 grams of protein is just a slight bit too much, not that that is necessarily such a bad thing.
"Big 100 Colossal Bars make the other bars look like wimps. Try a Big 100 Colossal Bar and you will never go back to wimpy little bars again."
The Big 100 Colossal Bar is pretty big and at 410 calories it certainly beats almost every other protein bar that I have ever tried in terms of protein content and overall calories, if not every bar. I will speak more on this below under the category "Nutritional Content".
As I mentioned above, I tried two different flavours of the Big 100 Colossal Bars: the Crispy Apple Pie and the Super Cookie Crunch flavours. I enjoyed both of them although I would give the clear advantage to the Super Cookie Crunch flavour. When I began eating it, I had no problem eating the entire bar very quickly. I have a very small appetite and for me, even eating a large protein bar is a lot of calories for me to consume. On the other hand, I could not consume the Crispy Apple Pie bar quickly and I did not feel it tasted as good. Although I would state that both bars were pretty good tasting, I would definitely give the edge to the Super Cookie Crunch flavour. I would award the Crispy Apple Pie bar a 7/10 in terms of taste while I would award the Super Cookie Crunch flavour a 9.5/10 in terms of taste. Both bars met my expectations in terms of taste as far as protein bars go although I would definitely give the edge to the Super Cookie Crunch bar which is one of the best protein bars that I have tried so far.
The Big 100 Colossal Bar is a bar which does indeed live up to its name. With a name like that, a person would assume that this bar is large in size, protein content, overall calories, or all of the above. The correct choice is all of the above, as this bar contains 31-32 grams of protein per bar depending on the flavour and 400-410 calories depending on the flavour. The bars contain 12 grams of fat, 6 of those grams being saturated fat, and 48 grams of carbohydrates. The bar contains numerous vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and others, and also contains a variety of minerals. You can view the nutritional information to see the percentage of the daily recommended value of each vitamin and mineral the bar contains.
If you click on the links included on this page, you will see that these bars cost $24.89 for a box of 12. That works out to slightly more than $2 per bar which is a reasonable price for bars of this size. Most bars are smaller than this bar and in fact, I don't recall any protein bar which is actually bigger. As such, I have to say that this protein bar is a good deal in terms of the value it offers.
To complete an overall review of any product, I have to review each product on the basis of a number of considerations, each of them listed more broadly above. First, in terms of taste, I would say that the
Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Bars certainly delivered and I enjoyed both flavours that I tried although I especially liked the Super Cookie Crunch flavour. In terms of nutritional content, the bars are in fact slightly more than I hope for in a protein bar as they contain around 100 calories more than I look for, at around 400 calories for this bar, and they also contain slightly more protein than I look for, at around 5 grams of protein more than I look for. I ordinarily look for protein bars which contain 20-25 grams of protein and the Met-Rx Big 100 Colossal Bars contain 31-32 grams of protein. At $24.48 for a box of 12, I would say that this product is priced at a good value and I would recommend it for bodybuilders who are seeking a slightly above average protein bar in terms of size and overall calories. Of course each individual should review his or her budget in order to determine whether or not this bar is the correct choice, but if you are seeking a protein bar, I would recommend this one. If you are not interested in buying an entire box, see if you can buy protein bars individually at the store and select a flavour that appeals to you and give it a shot. I suspect you might just like it.
