ABOUT THE DIET

One important thing to understand before starting any of a number of diets which claim to be Mayo Clinic diets is that the actual Mayo Clinic has no such diet. From their official website:

"A number of so-called "Mayo Clinic diets" have surfaced over the years. None of these originated at Mayo Clinic. In addition, Mayo Clinic doesn't endorse any of these "magic" diets that push grapefruit or eggs or promise to peel off pounds. Some may even be unhealthy for you."

Most of the diets which claim to be Mayo clinic are high in fat and low in carbohydrate. The diet also puts great importance on grapefruit supplementation, specifically for fat burning. The Mayo clinic diet, by lowering carbohydrates significantly, will call you to eliminate all sugars and starches. High fatty foods, red meat, salad, and bacon should be included in the diet.

DIET GUIDELINES

Breakfast:

1/2 a grapefruit
Two whole eggs (with yolk)
Two slices of bacon

Lunch:

1/2 a grapefruit
Salad (any style), with any type of dressing
Red meat, or other preferred meat source (any quantity - eat until full)

Dinner:

1/2 a grapefruit
Salad (any style) with any dressing, or vegetables cooked in butter or spice
Any type of meat, any quantity (eat until full)

Before Bed:

Drink one 8 ounce glass of skim milk or one 8 ounce glass of tomato juice.

Drinks:

Drink at least eight glasses of water daily.

The Mayo clinic works on the concept of eating until you are full and never going hungry. However, it has been empirically proven that to keep high blood sugar levels, the body needs steady flowing nutrition. Three meals a day is old fashion, but the Mayo diet tries for four. Not bad, but not quite there yet, either.

EXERCISE DURING THE DIET

The Mayo Clinic diet does not specify any particular type of exercise to be performed. From this, the likely conclusion is that the Mayo diet coupled with a healthy lifestyle and some daily aerobics or cardio activity will help you to lose weight. Like the type of meat in the diet, the type of exercises you do are up to you.

ADVANTAGES OF THE DIET

To me, the only appealing aspect of this diet is the unlimited quantities of red meat and fish not only allowed, but encouraged. Also, eight glasses of water a day is a healthy amount to stay hydrated.

DISADVANTAGES OF THE DIET

I don't claim to be an expert on the subject - but grapefruit is bitter. Not to mention, paying into a fad diet which will produce weight loss results at the cost of a healthy body will probably make many people bitter as well.

CONCLUSION

Fad diet. That's it. That's all. Period. And remember:

Aside from not being nutritionally safe or sound in the least, it is not recommended or approved by the actual Mayo Clinic at all.
