IDS BETANOX (ORANGE)
"BetaNOX combines the obvious need for intensity and mental focus with ARGISOL. In this readily absorbable liquid form, ARGISOL induces 'Flash Pumps'.* This means within seconds of your first exercise ARGISOL opens your blood vessels allowing a much larger volume of blood to flow to muscle group you are training.* This tremendous flow of blood not only encourages muscle size but also the anabolic activity or muscle growth during the workout*. With enlarged veins and swollen muscle bellies, BetaNOX delivers the feeling you are looking for and the look you are trying to achieve.*"
BetaNOX, like so many other supplements in the supplement industry, makes big claims and uses some level of bravado to sell the product. With that said, I did enjoy my experience with the product and I felt that it was a satisfactory product. More on my views on the product below.
- Produces Mental Intensity & Focus!
- Induces Rapid Muscle Growth!
- Increases Both Strength Aerobic Endurance!
As Dave mentioned in his review of BetaNOX, IDS BetaNOX is made up of some common ingredients [i.e. beta-alanine, arginine and other nitric oxide boosters]. It is not intended to help you to gain muscle but rather to give you a psychological edge pre-workout in order to maximize your performance in the gym. My experience with NO products in general is that they are capable of giving enough stimulation to provide some extra workout drive which is helpful, even if that drive does not manifest directly into increased muscular body weight. The added edge can translate into greater performance in the gym which can in turn result in greater gains. So in this indirect fashion, NO products can help you to grow.
"Stop Lactic Acid Pain!
BetaNOX contains BETASOL, Micro Enhanced Beta Alanine which acts like a sponge to soak up the H+ ions which build up during high intensity exercise. The Hydrogen ions cause the intense pain leading to reduced performance. Beta Alanine quickly works to create carnosine which quite literally eliminates H+ ions! Boosting muscle performance!"
I can speak from my experience with BetaNOX and state that I did not experience any lactic acid discomfort from using the product. However, I do not normally have problems with lactic acid and have actually not experienced the negative effects of it for a long time now so in comparison to my baseline, my use of BetaNOX did not significantly change things. With that said, I did not experience lactic acid discomfort and perhaps I would have on some of the days I trained with BetaNOX, so I can't say that this claim is incorrect, just that it is difficult for me to gauge, being an individual who does not normally have problems with it.
"Induces Flash Pumps! BetaNOX combines the obvious need for intensity and mental focus with ARGISOL. In this readily absorbable liquid form, ARGISOL induces "Flash Pumps". This means within seconds of your first exercise ARGISOL opens your blood vessels allowing a much larger volume of blood to flow to muscle group you are training. This tremendous flow of blood not only increases the muscle size but also the anabolic activity or muscle growth during the workout. With enlarged veins and swollen muscle bellies, BetaNOX delivers the feeling you are looking for and the look you are trying to achieve."
This claim is of course rather dramatic in terms of its presentation, but the overall crux is true, that being that this product does result in bodybuilders and other athletes achieving a better pump. More or less all products advertise in this manner so it is to be expected, but put more mildly than the claim puts it, this product does the job to increase a pump.
I tried the ORANGE flavour of IDS BetaNOX and as Dave said in his review, it had a mouthwash-like taste. However, I actually didn't mind this and being able to taste the active ingredients helps me somewhat mentally in setting some expectation for the product to work. Also, keep in mind that each shot of BetaNOX is small and no matter what you think of the taste, it takes little to no time for it to be consumed. Therefore it really is not a problem at all to drink it, regardless of what you think of the taste. I happen to enjoy the taste in a way, even though I would not drink it as juice on a regular basis. But it is not juice and is only needed to be drank in one quick pre-workout blast so the taste is really not a problem even for those who will not like it. I look forward to trying the other flavours in the future.
The BetaNOX pre-workout shot is pre-mixed so it does not need any mixing and does not produce anything in the way of lumps and clumps. I would shake it prior to using which I suppose is never a bad idea, but not completely necessary either as it is a very smooth drink and doesn't consist of chunky ingredients which will settle at the bottom. In terms of solubility and texture, I think that BetaNOX is an excellent product.
I find that BetaNOX produces an effect similar to when a person uses caffeine. However, I felt that the effect was a little less edgy and thus a little more enjoyable. I used BetaNOX for the following chest workout and achieved a new personal record for benching 225 with good form, managing 23 reps. My bench workout was as follows:
Tuesday, July 4th, 2011
50X12, 135X8, 185X6, 225X23, 275X6, 300X2, 280X5, 295X2
The reps I completed above were full reps without the assistance of a spotter. I think with some cheat reps or with looser form, I would have been able to get more reps than I did but I was very pleased with the result I achieved.
The next day I performed a back workout and was initially attempting to achieve a personal record on the tra bar deadlift exercise but decided against it when I felt a pulling strain on my biceps during one of my sets leading up to what I was hoping would be a personal best. I stopped at 510 as per the back routine outlined below:
Wednesday, July 5th, 2011
Trap Bar Deadlift:
170X6, 260X5, 350X3, 440X1, 510X1
U-Bar Handle Lat Pulldown:
5X8, 8X8, 10X8
After doing the 510 pound trap bar deadlift for a single rep to full lockout, I decided against going higher in weight. My goal was to beat my previous personal record on this exercise of 550 pounds. I had originally intended on getting 570 and to be honest, I felt that I could have done it today or something close to it, but felt that it may risk a biceps injury or another strain of some sort to my upper arm which felt some discomfort after performing this exercise. I have a tendency to "snap" when I begin my deadlift exercise and pull very hard using my arms as levers at the bottom of the range of motion, rather than driving through my feet as I should. I do not believe I have any long term injury to my arm and I think I should be fine by my next workout, but just in case, I am not going to go higher than 80% of my 1RM until I can be certain that I do not risk this same sort of strain. All in all I feel good as of this writing which is over an hour after performing the workout above. Thus, I do not feel that I am in any serious risk of greater injury.
Overall I was very pleased with the quality of this product and I have another sample left and I plan to review it again very soon. It is a worthwhile product to use which is convenient to bring to the gym and affordable as far as NO products are concerned. I would definitely recommend using this product and I feel that if you give it a try once you quite likely will enjoy it and want to try it again.
