ABOUT THE
DIET
Created by Dr. William Hay in the early 20th century, the Hay diet
is founded on the concept that the body experiences greater
difficulty digesting more than one of a certain type of
micronutrient at the same time. ie, the body will find it more
difficult to digest a food item which contains both protein and
carbohydrates. As a result, eating such foods will cause our
digestive systems to work inefficiently and store bodyfat as a
result. This conclusion was drawn from the fact that the eating
habits of our ancestors would have not be as complex as they are
today, and since we evolved from them, changing our eating habits
to those of modern times will cause unwanted gains in bodyfat not
seen in the age of the caveman.
Essentially, the hay diet says there are a number of things wrong
with modern eating habits, but not as obvious as the ones you may
thing. Dr. Hay believed that the body has difficulty eliminating
waste as a result of eating too few alkaline forming vegetabls and
fruits, mixing incompatible foods as briefly described above, and
that with a few changes this can be taken care of. Since the Hay
diet is a large critic of modern eating, processed foods should be
cut down or eliminated. By doing this, your body will improve in
its ability to eliminate waste.
DIET
GUIDELINES
60% of this
diet consists of fruits and vegetables. Aside from this, you should
eat other foods containing proteins and starches, but they
shouldn't be eaten together or within three or four hours of one
another. Space your food intake out evenly throughout the day to
keep adequate blood sugar levels.
EXERCISE
DURING THE DIET
No exercise during this diet is specified. This is the kind of
diet which is said to work solely on nutrition alone. It is a diet
for life, and if you can keep it up, they say, you will be all the
leaner for doing so.
ADVANTAGES
OF THE DIET
There is no restriction of quantity of food in this diet, just
quality. There are also no set eating periods during this diet. You
are allowed to snack frequently to keep energy levels high. You
will also likely lose some weight on this diet, which should be
expected, as the diet is comprised of not really anything
unhealthy.
DISADVANTAGES OF THE
DIET
This diet is just hard to follow! I can't imagine how difficult it
would be to find the correct charts and tables to show which foods
contain protein, which contain starches, and which contain both.
Once you get such a table, no the exact chemical makeup of each
piece of food you eat, and think you can follow this diet
successfully, go ahead and give it a try. Although it has yet to be
proven scientifically, it is a step ahead of the norm in fad diets
of today.
CONCLUSION
This diet is better than usual, but in an age well the usual is as
poor as it is as far as diets are concerned, that doesn't say an
awful lot. I wouldn't try to avoid this diet, but I wouldn't place
much hope in it, either.
