Abs
The Cable Crunch
Every well rounded
bodybuilder will focus on abdominal development as much as any
other part. There are many well known ways to develop abs, but some
exercises are frequently overlooked. One such exercise is the cable
crunch.
Muscle Group
Emphasis
The major muscle group
involved in the cable crunch are the abdominal muscles. The cable
crunch develops the rectus obdominis, the external obliques, and
the internal obliques. For more information on these areas of the
abominals, click here.
Muscle
Action
In the cable crunch
exercise, all the abdominal muscles are responsible for flexion of
the lower spine. In this action, the upper body moves towards the
lower body.
Non Bodybuilding
Applications
The cable crunch exercise
is especially important in many sports that require spinal flexion
with the trunk in motion. Examples are listed below:
- Baseball
Pitch
- Football Forward
Pass
- Tennis Serve
- Badminton
Smash
- Javelin Throw
- Other spots which require
overhead throwing or hitting
For bodybuilders, it is
extremly important for development of the abdominals and to get the
needed muscle definition. In addition, any athlete who must handle
heavy loads overhead needs strong abdominals (and a strong back) to
help maintain a firm midsection.
