I was looking for a high quality creatine product and was recommended by a friend to try BSN's Cellmass. This product contains Creatine Ethyl Ester Malate, Glutamine AKG and a couple ingredients (Cinnulin PF, Di-Calcium Phosphate, Di-Potassium Phosphate and Di-Sodium Phosphate) that are supposed to help increase creatine absorption without the use of high glycemic index carbohydrates. Although I am not totally convinced Creatine Ethyl Ester is any better than regular Creatine Monohydrate, I decided to give another product containing this type of creatine a try. Although Creatine Monohydrate works for me, it sometimes upsets my stomach and also leaves me looking a little bloated—something I do not particularly enjoy. Creatine Ethyl Ester is supposed to have better absorption and thus eliminate these sides. After finishing my container of BSN's Cellmass, my opinion is as follows:
The flavour I tested was Grape Cooler. I did not particularly enjoy the flavour. To me it tasted like a melted artificial grape Popsicle, a flavour I do not enjoy. It was also a little too sweet for my liking. However, the sweetness can be remedied by diluting it with more water. Also, although I found the flavouring to be rather artificial, I must commend BSN for camouflaging the taste of the creatine ethyl ester. If anyone has tried bulk creatine ethyl ester powder they will know that the taste is horribly sour/bitter and almost impossible to mask. BSN's product was neither too sour nor bitter. Due to these reasons I am giving the taste a score of 6.5/10.
The mixing instruction are to mix one scoop of Cellmass with 4-6 oz of cold water following your workout on an empty stomach. They also recommend a second serving either 6-8 hours before or after your post-workout serving. I found that this product mixed fairly well with only a little bit of stirring required. Also, not much residue/gritty powder was left on the bottom of the cup. However, in order to make sure no product is wasted I stirred it a couple times while drinking it. For mixability/texture I award it a 8.5/10.
After trying the product I believe that it is indeed a high quality creatine product. I found that during my workouts I was able to complete a couple more repetitions before lactic acid started to accumulate in my muscles. This is to be expected since 60% of the ingested creatine is stored as phosphocreatine (PCr) which will serve as an energy reserve which will then provide the phosphate to allow rapid ATP resynthesis.
Illustrated by the following reaction:
(PCr + ADP (adenosine diphosphate)--------- (creatine kinase) --------- ->C + ATP (adenosine triphosphate)
But in simple terms, creatine will result in more energy available to complete maximum exercise of short duration (weightlifting) that relies on this energy system (ATP-PCr). So basically you should be able to perform more repetitions before getting tired/ accumulating too much lactic acid.
I also thought this product was effective as I could notice a strength increase. I was able to use heavier weights than before as well as do more repetitions with the weights that I normally use.
As far as side effects, I experienced little. I experienced no stomach upset and no noticeable bloat. However, one annoying side effect that I noticed was that my mouth was constantly dry. This still persisted despite drinking lots of water. I don't recall having this side effect with other creatine products I have tried. However, perhaps this is due to the fact that the creatine could have been very good and I simply was not drinking as much water as I thought. Either way, I found this to be a very annoying side effect and I probably would not buy this product again due to this. I am giving this product a score of 7.5/10 for this reason. This score reflects the performance gain I expect from a creatine product. I did not take into account any possible improved recovery from the other ingredients in the product (glutamine etc.) since I find gains in this area difficult to quantify. This does not mean that the product did not help in that area.
As a side note, I only took one scoop a day following my workout. I did not take the recommended two scoops a day since I feel it to be a waste of product. Perhaps the extra scoop might increase effectiveness, or perhaps it will just cause you to run out of product sooner (and have to buy more)~ who knows.
Overall I believe Cellmass to be a quality creatine product and would recommend it to those who have the money to spend on it. However, I also recommend a drastic increase in water intake while using it.
Overall I give BSN's Cellmass a score of 7.5/10.
