Introduction:
AllMax Nutrition ZMA
I decided to try out a ZMA product due to the claims that 30 mg of zinc and 450 mg of magnesium taken together has been shown to naturally raise testosterone levels--- and of course with higher testosterone levels one would be able to recover from workouts faster and thus build more muscle. Most of the ZMA products state that their claims are backed by scientific research.
The directions on the bottle say to take 3 capsules on an empty stomach 30-60 min before bed. I followed the directions, however, the next morning I had an upset stomach and had to go to the bathroom frequently. Thinking it was a coincidence, I again tried taking the supplement the next evening only to have the same thing happen. I even tried taking just 1 cap instead of 3 but still had an upset stomach the following day. I decided to stop the ZMA. I gave it one last try a couple weeks later but again ended up with "the runs" the following morning. Unfortunately, due to this reason I am unable to comment on ZMA's claimed ability at increasing muscle gains.
However, my personal opinion is that a mineral supplement such as this will only show results if the individual taking such a supplement is deficient in zinc or magnesium to begin with. Also, I would like to point out that in all the supplement ads for ZMA, I noticed that only one study is quoted over and over again with these claims and supposedly the study was also funded by the original developer of ZMA --Victor Conte (founder of Balco) (http://jmorrow50.wordpress.com/2008/08/25/does-zma-actually-work).
By conducting a simple search I only found two other articles on this supplement and they both concluded that ZMA supplementation does not increase serum testosterone levels:
"Results indicated that ZMA supplementation non-significantly increased serum zinc levels by 11 – 17% (p = 0.12). However, no significant differences were observed between groups in anabolic or catabolic hormone status, body composition, 1-RM bench press and leg press, upper or lower body muscular endurance, or cycling anaerobic capacity. Results indicate that ZMA supplementation during training does not appear to enhance training adaptations in resistance trained populations."

"No significant changes in serum total and serum free testosterone were observed in response to ZMA use."
"Also, the urinary excretion pattern of testosterone metabolites was not significantly altered in ZMA users. Conclusions: The present data suggest that the use of ZMA has no significant effects regarding serum testosterone levels and the metabolism of testosterone in subjects who consume a zinc-sufficient diet."

With that being said, I still see many people talking about ZMA and they seem to like it. Many also say that it helps them sleep better. Although there doesn't seem to be a lot of scientific evidence to show ZMA actually works, I believe the positive response from users of ZMA makes it something worth trying. Since this particular ZMA product is fairly inexpensive ($14.99), I think people should try it out and see for themselves.
