ActivStart Nutrition Soy Protein Shake
Hi this is Steve. I am reviewing a product "Soy Protein Shake" by ActivStart Nutrition. My first impression upon opening it was that it looks and smells like hot chocolate mix. Soon I had an urge to taste it with soy milk but I was unpleasantly surprised to find out that with milk and soy milk it tasted awful. When I added by usual couple of frozen strawberries, it tasted even worse. I would categorize its taste to mud or expired cocoa.
On the bright side, which in my opinion balances this product to having more positives than negatives, it is soy protein which I believe to be better than protein in regular foods. It says on the label that it reduced your risk of heart disease which is a critical illness like heart attack, liver disease, stroke, and even cancer. Other notable positives include fiber and no other carbohydrates, over 75% of this products makeup being protein, having only good fats, low in sodium and no presence of saturated fat, trans fat and no sugar as well. Seems to me this product would be the ideal meal replacement when you are on the rush.
Other ingredients are soy protein isolate, cocoa, natural flavours, maltodextrin, guar gum and stevia. Activstart Soy Protein Isolate (SPI) is instant and mixes easily with a spoon. They suggest mixing it with fruits although I have not tried it because I do not eat fruits. For those with dairy allergies, this product is made with equipment having traces of dairy.
Stevia is much sweeter than sugar and does not have any of sugar's unhealthy drawbacks. Stevia is a powerful herb which has been safely used for hundreds of years as well as passing dozens of safety tests. This herb does not harm your teeth and it can be welcomed to be combined with sugar and other sweeteners so in essence, this entire product is usable at any time of day with whatever you choose to eat. Buying it on bodybuildingpro.com or bodybuilding.com is a great value as it is priced similar to that of other proteins even in larger bulk prices. Buying ten of these is not considerably more expensive than buying a bulk protein that is ten times the size from any other supplement sellers. This is encouraging in that you can keep the other 90% of your protein fresher.
Soy Protein Shake by ActivStart Nutrition is also available in strawberry and vanilla although this review is regarding the chocolate flavour as that was all I have to review.
The less soy protein you add, the better it seems to taste. It seems that when you put the suggested serving of one scoop per cup of milk or water, it is too much chocolate so start small and build up the amount of soy protein you mix with whatever liquid gradually.
