The 2010 Tampa Bay Pro / Pro Bodybuilding Weekly Championships was a good show to give an impression of what the upcoming 2010 Mr. Olympia contest may have in store for us. We got a peak at some of the best current bodybuilders, some of whom [and more] will be attending the 2010 Mr. Olympia contest this year. The 2010 Tampa Bay Pro bodybuilding contest is also called the 2010 Pro Bodybuilding Weekly bodybuilding championships. Below is a full contest report on the show.

Now I will make detailed comments below for each bodybuilder:

1st: Ben White
Ben White looked very good and was improved from the 2009 rendition of this contest both in terms of size and conditioning. He has freaky thickness and muscle density, no doubt a result of the heavy training program he is on. Just three weeks before this contest, Ben deadlifted 405 for 20 reps which is very impressive for anyone, especially a bodybuilder on a strict bodybuilding diet. Ben can bench press 315 for over 20 reps and has a one rep max bench press close to 600 pounds. Ben has big arms and legs, a great taper, and looks great in the classic front double biceps pose as well as others. Ben has a thick chest and a thick back which look great in the particular poses which highlight those areas. Ben will hopefully bring the same package to the Mr. Olympia and perform well at the best bodybuilding contest in the world.
2nd: Troy Alves
Troy Alves looked amazing at this contest and quite frankly, around the best I had ever seen him. I can only assume his body weight is around 215 because his body weight was 212 when he won the 2009 Orlando Pro Show. Troy has been known to compete as high as around 230 but I do not think he lost much in the way of quality at this lower body weight. He perhaps traded some size in his legs for superior conditioning including his hamstrings and glutes tie-in. Although I should point out that Troy will be 44 this year  and I find that other bodybuilders [such as Vince Taylor, Joel Stubbs, and others who are 40+] lose size in their legs as they age. It seems that is an area which atrophies first. With that said, Troy's legs were probably also the most shredded that I had ever seen them so he really can't be faulted - As I said, Troy truly looked great at this contest and it could even be argued that he should have won. He trumped Ben White in terms of conditioning but presumably Ben's bigger legs and overall superior size placed him ahead of Troy. I hope Troy competes at the 2010 Mr. Olympia contest because it will be very impressive to see a 44 year old bodybuilder do well in the best bodybuilding show in the world.
3rd: Johnnie Jackson
I was always impressed with Johnnie Jackson, not just as a bodybuilder, but as a powerlifter which is a passion very near and dear to Johnnie's heart. Johnnie has deadlifted 821 pounds before which is an incredible lift and he can definitely accurately claim to be one of the strongest professional bodybuilders in the world. I have found that in recent years [since perhaps 2007], Johnnie's legs have been reduced in size compared to the size they were closer to the time he turned professional in 2001 at age 31. Johnnie is 39 now yet I have to say this is the best he has looked in a long while and his shows appeared to me to be as big as ever. Increased size can be due to decreased conditioning but I can't say that this is the case. In fact, I would think if anything that Johnnie was a touch sharper than he has been at recent shows. I was happy to see this performance by Johnnie because while his strength is as high as ever, I felt that he was on the slow but steady decline in terms of the quality he brings to bodybuilding competition. I felt that this performance was very good and since he qualifies for the Olympia, it would be nice to see him replicate the package he brought to the table here in Tampa or even improve still. I retract my previous thoughts on Johnnie's decline and I suspect that he can still remain competitive and qualify for the Mr. Olympia for some time yet and hopefully still enter contests well into his forties.
4th: Edward Nunn
Edward Nunn has a great structure for bodybuilding - A small waist, broad shoulders and long muscle attachment sites. As a result, he is the kind of guy who would always look good, even if he were to come in off. But for this contest, he definitely did not come in off and placed 4th in the lineup. His biceps and quads were looking huge and I honestly think that his quads were similar in measurement to his waist, or perhaps even bigger. So I can assume his waist was around 30", which for a professional bodybuilder is extremely small. A waist will grow along with everything else, so it is unreasonable to expect bodybuilders in excess of 250 pounds to maintain the same wasp waists they had at under 180 pounds, perhaps in their amateur days. Edward's huge shoulders were on display in the front lat spread pose which highlighted his great bodybuilding proportions. Although I had read online that Edward could fit another 40 pounds on his frame, I do not see this as necessary. In fact, adding 5-7 pounds while slowly improving his conditioning would make him a perennial Mr. Olympia qualified bodybuilder in my opinion. Although he was one place shy of qualifying this year, I think that he will not have any problems doing so at future contests.
5th: Michael Kefalianos
I had first heard of Michael Kefalianos when I saw his photos from the 2009 Mr. Olympia contest. He was big and shredded and had some of the thinnest skin that I had seen at that contest or any other for that matter. It was clear to me that based on his conditioning that he was world class and he wasn't lacking for size. At this contest, he brought the same amazing conditioning that he has consistently brought to contests since I had first heard of him in 2009 and was looking fantastic. His quads were big and shredded, he had cut abs, and his arms showed clear separation between his biceps and triceps. Although it doesn't end there because his chest was striated and his back displayed the Christmas tree originated by Samir Bannout and seen on various top bodybuilders since then. His calves were also in amazing conditioning and Michael is a thick bodybuilder who packs lots of mass on his frame. I think he will definitely show up on the Olympia stage in the future and I would like to see him place in the top 10 eventually so that he can say he is one of the top 10 best bodybuilders in the world. I would say that he certainly has that potential if he continues to make improvements.
6th: Brandon Curry
Brandon Curry has been given a lot of hype and was picked up by BSN Supplements where the hype continued. It is understandable that people would think highly of him as he has packed on a huge amount of mass with a great structure and one can assume that if he can make perpetual improvements you would see him being one of the best bodybuilders in the world. However, sometimes potential is not always realized and Brandon has not shown the Phil Heath potential that I believe a lot of people saw him in, at least not yet. Brandon's structure is still amazing and like Edward Nunn, I think he is the kind of bodybuilder who would basically always look good, even if he entered a contest four weeks out. He has some amazing genetic gifts which could easily be taken for granted but if Brandon wants to be one of the best bodybuilders in the world, I am pretty confident that he has the structure and ability to get into condition that would be necessary to achieve such a goal. I am not completely certain of that, but his round proportions look great and I think this can be done.
7th: Hidetada Yamagishi
I had heard a lot of talk about Hidetada Yamagishi regarding this contest and when I initially went online to look at the pictures I had assumed the worst. After looking at them I would concede that Hidetada did not bring a spectacular package to the show and was not at his best, yet still looked pretty good and not nearly as bad as I had expected him to look after reading the comments of some others. His front lat spread was still a strong pose, even if he was down in size. His side chest pose was also down in size and not as impressive as it was earlier in the year and that was the first pose where I noticed a significant decline in the quality of his physique at this contest. His hamstrings were also rather smooth in this pose which was not the case earlier in the year. Still, if this is Hide "off", then I would say that he can definitely regroup and come back better at a later show and regain whatever loss in reputation he may have experienced at this show because I don't think he looked too bad really, although he was clearly worse than he was at his other contests of 2010.
8th: Paco Bautista
Paco's strength is definitely size and conditioning and really, what is bodybuilding about if not for those two qualities? Well, I suppose structure and posing would be the other two aspects of competitive bodybuilding but as bodybuilders got bigger and bigger and size, size definitely got placed at the forefront and structure took a backseat to it. Paco's quads were absolutely huge and SHREDDED. He had vascularity and striations all over and was basically a walking anatomy chart. Perhaps not to the extent of Andreas Munzer, but certainly one of the closest modern day versions around, in terms of the uncanny muscularity he demonstrated in various poses or even standing relaxed. Looking at picture after picture, I was so impressed by his size and conditioning that I felt he should have placed higher than some of the "prettier" physiques which placed ahead of his. In fact, I will not deny that the competitors who beat Paco had structural advantages over him, but his mind-boggling size made me feel that he should have placed much higher because when you are THAT big, what else matters? After all, this is still bodybuilding and the undeniable trend of awarding sheer size and conditioning has been huge as time has passed since the first Mr. Olympia contest that Larry Scott won in 1965. With that said, Dexter Jackson's win at the 2008 Mr. Olympia contest proves that it isn't solely about size, but as I said, sometimes so much size simply can't be denied and I feel that this is one of those times. Although some of Paco's poses such as the front lat spread highlighted his structural disadvantages compared to the competition, his massive size mostly made up for such shortcomings. I look forward to seeing Paco Bautista compete at the Mr. Olympia contest again and I feel that he has not declined since his last performance at the Olympia in 2007 and in fact, he most likely showed some improvements. Depending on the judging, Paco will surely be competing at the world's best bodybuilding contest again.
9th: Michael Liberatore
Michael Liberatore has a good physique and had a pretty good showing at this contest, although I have seen him look better before. He was in pretty good condition though and this was apparent based on the conditioning of his hamstrings and glutes which are normally good indicators of overall conditioning. I can't really say he was "off" but unfortunately for most bodybuilders when they set the bar for themselves at a certain height it is a habit of a lot of judges and critics to compare them to their best-ever performance and sometimes not to their competition. With that in mind I thought that even though Michael was not at his best at this contest, he was still judged fairly. I feel that being in the top 10 in this show, but in the position that he was was not necessarily unfair and that given the depth of competition he more or less placed where he should have. His quads showed great separation and his delts and chest were full in the hands on hips most muscular pose. As it is, I think he could show up better, but that he was only a touch off, and nothing dramatic.
10th: Darrem Charles
Darrem Charles is a great bodybuilder who has been competing for over 20 years, 18 of those years being in the IFBB professional bodybuilding ranks. He is 42 years old and has demonstrated tremendous longevity for a person competing since a very early age. He was considerably off at the 2009 Mr. Olympia contest but was looking pretty good at this contest displaying his trademark cross-striated quads. His legs may have been down slightly and as I said, it is almost always the legs which go first in bodybuilders as they get older, particularly the inner thighs. I felt that Darrem's upper body was not as conditioned as his lower body although it should be noted that his triceps displayed cross-striations as well. From the back, although his glutes did show striations, it was clear that his back was not as shredded as it has been in past shows. In the "Tips" section of Darrem Charles' "From Dream to Reality" DVD, Darrem said that he never does cardio. I am not sure if this is still the case, but it is clear that Darrem's lightning fast metabolism is slowing down a little with age so perhaps now is the time to incorporate cardio into his pre-contest routine if he has not already. Don't get me wrong, Darrem looked good and had as much size as ever if not more, but will need to tighten up a little and regain his previous form if he wants to qualify for the Olympia again. Darrem was a sponsored bodybuilder for MuscleTech for many years and in order to maintain such contracts with supplement companies, performance is crucial. I do not think that Darrem is particularly old at age 42, but having competed for over half of his life, I can understand that such a thing would cause wear on the body.
11th: Alexandre Nataf
I admit that I had not heard of Alexandre Nataf before this contest and the first impression I got from him was that he was huge and definitely not lacking in terms of size compared to other professional bodybuilders. His quads were huge and displayed deep separation and his lats were huge and flaring, especially in the front double biceps pose which also demonstrated the thickness of his upper chest which did not disappear in that pose as is the case for other bodybuilders. In the side chest pose, his delts were gigantic as were his hamstrings. He definitely had a lot of thickness in that pose. Obviously Alexandre's strength is his size, particularly the size of his shoulders and hamstrings. As such, I feel that he should focus on refinement and bringing the mass he has to contests in the best conditioning possible. He does not need to continue to train for more size when he already has plenty. Certain areas could possibly be improved in terms of size but I think that lack of size is not relegating him to outside of the top 10. In fact, my suspicion is merely that of name recognition at this point. I think Alexandre brought both size and conditioning to the table but being an unfamiliar face makes it easier for judges to mark him down. A lot of bodybuilders go through a stage of "paying their dues" before they begin to place higher in bodybuilding contests. I do not intend to sound conspiratorial but I do believe that lack of name recognition is hurting his placings somewhat. Beyond that, I would say that improved conditioning will also help him and that it will come in time where he will be able to show his enormous mass on display with all the detail necessary to do so.
12th: Costanties Demetrious
Con looked very good and is a bodybuilder who I think will continue to improve over time should his goal be to pursue professional bodybuilding to the highest level [i.e., the Mr. Olympia contest]. While Con was shredded in certain areas at this contest, certain other areas clearly lacked the conditioning necessary to be competitive, such as his quads for example. It seemed to me that the separation in his quads could be demonstrated, but only when he made it a point to flex very hard to bring it out. His abs and serratus looked very cut and I feel that a touch better conditioning could have done it for him. I think he was full and his muscles popped, but that they could have stood to be a little tighter. I think with that increased conditioning that he would have done a little better at this show and cracked the top 10. Although bodybuilding is obviously about size and conditioning, I have to say that I was personally very impressed with Con's physique as it is one that could be manageable in day-to-day life. I am not 100% sure of that but I would say that compared to some of the bodybuilders whose body weights are closing in on 300 pounds, that Con has a more practical physique for everyday life.
13th: Omar Deckard
Omar is a tall bodybuilder who stands 6'1 and competes at around the 280 range. He is definitely a mass monster, not lacking for size, yet tall enough where that amount of weight is necessary for him to compete against the bodybuilders who are medium height or shorter. To me, Omar seemed clearly off, although not without strong qualities. His conditioning has been better in the past and prevented him from fulfilling his potential at this contest. It was apparent in his front lat spread that he has been both more shredded and fuller in the past as seen through the lack of thickness in his chest compared to previous showings and his abs which looked smooth in that pose. His shoulders did not show the clear distinction as a muscular unit and more or less smoothly blended with his chest and arms and did not "pop" as I had seen in Omar's front lat spread in the past, which leads me to the claim that he was both soft and flat at this contest. A lot of bodybuilders come in soft [or at least soft by professional bodybuilding standards] yet full [as in the case of Con reviewed just above], but in Omar's case, I would have to say that he was off all around. His legs were also very smooth. In the rear lat spread, looking solely at his back I would say that it was not as apparent that he was off until looking at his lower body where it was clear. The same goes for Omar's rear double biceps pose where his conditioning was remarkably good but that is just proof that Omar has a very strong back and even being off, his back still looks huge and shredded. His abs were more ripped in his hands-on-hips most muscular pose. Overall, it is safe to say that Omar was off at this contest, hence his 13th place finish at the contest.
14th: Manuel Romero
Manuel Romero is another bodybuilder who I was not too familiar with and only remember him from the 2010 New York Pro show earlier in the year. At this contest as well as others, when bodybuilders are off, this is sometimes not consistent throughout their entire physique. Some bodybuilders are soft in particular areas and not others and I believe that this was true in the case of Manuel as well. For example, while his chest was smooth, his quads were shredded and deeply separated. Not to mention, his quads were huge so to me it seemed that Manuel had some of the best quads in the entire contest in terms of size and conditioning. If his upper body had been in the same condition as his lower body I think he would have placed higher for sure. There was quite the disparity between Manuel's top and bottom although from the rear poses this was less so the case. You could see that his glutes were beginning to show some striations but it would have taken a little more deiting for them to be as shredded as some of the other competitors at the show. As for his back, and hamstrings, overall they were about even in terms of conditioning which was not terribly off, but at least enough off to relegate him to 14th place in this contest. While I found it difficult to tell whether or not his chest lacked thickness or simply lacked conditioning, I still think improving his conditioning will bring him up in the ranks and that Manuel has the structure and mass necessary to do damage.
15th: JoJo Ntiforo
Like Edward Nunn, JoJo Ntiforo is one who has a classical physique in terms of his proportions and symmetry. JoJo also has a small waist and huge quads in relation which probably all have the same measurement of around 30". JoJo also has round shoulders and long muscle attachment sites. His is a structure that is difficult to mess up, even if he comes in off for a contest, as was the case this time around. Basically if JoJo brought better conditioning to the table he would have placed higher but unfortunately he did not which put him in 15th place at this contest. This was the same story for several other guys here and I hope that JoJo comes back better than ever in future shows. He truly has a great physique given his structure and even though he did not place highly at this contest, I still felt he looked very good.
Bodybuilders Who Did Not Place:
A number of bodybuilders placed outside of the top 15 at this contest and are listed below:

Although some of the bodybuilders above lacked the conditioning necessary to succeed at this contest, some others lacked in other areas, whether it be lack of size, structural disadvantages, lack of name recognition or some combination of the above. This was unfortunate because some of them appeared to have great potential and I expect to hear from them again in the future.
The lightweight class was another strong lineup and the top three from the class qualify to enter the 202 Showdown at the Mr. Olympia contest this year. Below is a review of the competitors who entered the lightweight class with comments for each bodybuilder:
1st: Jose Raymond
Jose looked very good and had great size for a 202 pound bodybuilder, particularly in his legs where he displayed huge quads, hamstrings, and calves. His most muscular was thick and he was definitely big. With that said, I felt that his conditioning did not look to be one which belonged to a bodybuilding contest winner and this was demonstrated in certain poses, particularly in his upper body. He was clearly good enough to win which may mean that there is something that I was not seeing in the photos. But as I said, he was not lacking for size so that was possibly the major driving force which resulted in this win. I felt that his front double biceps looked great which featured his huge arms and legs and flaring lats with a chest which did not disappear in the pose. Jose was also capable of showing a vacuum pose which indicates that his stomach was not larger than his muscles as is the case with a lot of modern bodybuilders who put on too much mass on their frames.
2nd: Steve Namat:
I had seen and heard a lot about Steve Namat in the time leading up to the contest and he definitely wanted to do well and looked like he would based on his "weeks out" photos which he posted online. It seemed to me that Steve took a well-deserved 2nd place at this contest and qualified for the 2010 Mr. Olympia by doing so. I would say that Steve showed better conditioning than Jose did, although it cannot be denied that Jose had superior size as seen in his arms and legs and throughout his physique. In this case it would appear that the judges chose to award size over conditioning which relegated Steve to 2nd place. Perhaps Steve could stand to bring up his conditioning slightly as he is sharper from the front than he is from the back, but nevertheless was pretty shredded at this contest. It should be noted that Steve still displayed a Christmas tree from the back. My recommendation for Steve would be to continue to make improvements as long as the muscle he packs on does not happen to quickly in such a way that would ruin his physique as has been shown in other bodybuilders who have damaged their physiques by putting on too much size too fast.
3rd: Richard "Tricky" Jackson
I thought that Tricky looked the best I had seen him in a long time as I don't recall the last time I saw him both this big and in the condition he was in. Tricky is Dexter Jackson's cousin and some have said that they resemble one another in the face and in the physique and I would agree with that sentiment. Tricky is over the age of 40 yet as I said, I felt he looked better at this contest than he had in a long time. I think he was a deserving member of the top three at this contest, and I would say that the judges positioned him correctly in the overall placings at this show by placing him 3rd. I look forward to seeing him at the 2010 Mr. Olympia in Las Vegas should he plan to attend.
4th: Nathaniel Wonsley
Nathan Wonsley is a rather tall bodybuilder at around 5'9-5'10 so I was surprised to see him compete at under 202 pounds in a category which is mostly reserved for bodybuilders under 5'7 and even some bodybuilders who are 5'5 or taller do not compete in this category due to the mass [and thus weight] they have on their frame. Nathan seriously impresses me, all the more because he is 46 years old! He is a tremendously good light-heayvweight and I do not see any major signs of age on his physique which are normally visible by way of excess skin under the chest or on the abs. Instead, Nathan's skin looked tight, perhaps with but a minor decline in quality with age. I was shocked that Nathan could only weigh 202 but it is quite possible that he weighed in at around the 200-202 range but carbed up before the contest which put him closer to 207-212. I had heard that Kevin English employed a similar strategy and therefore had a stage weight slightly higher than the 202 cut-off which as far as I know is only required for the time of being weighed, similar to how the UFC weighs its competitors in, some of whom bulk up a little by the time of the actual fight. Nathan displayed huge and striated quads, huge arms, and round delts. It was sad to see him narrowly miss a qualification for the 2010 Mr. Olympia contest and I hope he qualifies in the future. He is definitely a fantastic competitor and has an athletic and balanced look for everyday life, in addition to being an excellent bodybuilder.
5th: Luc Molines
Luc Molines looked very good and in particular had very shredded quads. His upper body was lean despite not being the knockout that his legs were. However, in his side chest pose it was clear that he was in great condition given the incredible vascularity of his chest which was as impressive as I had ever seen anyone's chest look in that regard. His rear lat spread highlighted his huge and thick back and his Superman tattoo. His rear double biceps displayed top-to-bottom conditioning and he definitely had dense muscles which leads me to believe that he has some strength behind his size as well, although I do not know that for a fact and I am only going based on appearance. It could be argued that Luc and Nathan should have changed places based on Luc's superior conditioning.
6th: Clarence DeVis
Clarence DeVis displayed a huge and round physique although not with the conditioning that some of the bodybuilders who beat him had. Clarence was similar to Darrem Charles in the way that even though he had cross-striated thighs, it still seemed as though he could have been tighter in that area, although it could have simply been a matter of application of oil to bring out the condition which he had. A lot of what goes on in the bodybuilding world rests on visual illusions such as that one. His chest was thick and round and looked good in virtually all poses. His muscles were round and he had a look that would be more appropriate for a cartoon character or a superhero. He had an impressive rear double biceps pose and his rear lat spread pose was both wide and thick. Clarence is another bodybuilder who could have stood to place a little higher although there were some high grade bodybuilders in the 202 field so he was definitely given a run for his money and ultimately ended up in 6th place.
7th: Abiu Feliz
I admit that Abiu Feliz was a bodybuilder who I had not heard of before this contest and my first impression of him was that he brought very good conditioning to the show. His conditioning was good and he showed that his skin was tight and he was dry all around. His abs still showed to be deeply cut in the front double biceps pose where the abs of a lot of bodybuilders would disappear. He had good conditioning in his back poses as well and his glutes were striated. His back showed deep separation which was impossible to miss in his rear double biceps pose. Despite the fact that Abiu had all-around good conditioning, conditioning is but one factor in bodybuilding competition with the other factors being size, genetic structure, and posing. Abiu would need more size if he hopes to continue to progress in bodybuilding which I am confident can happen with slow and steady improvements, should he wish to pursue bodybuilding competitively in the 202-class.
8th: Frederic Sauvage
Frederic Sauvage looked very good at this contest and I would have likely placed him higher at this contest. I found a lot of discrepancy in the way I would have judged the 202-class compared to how the judges did which I expand on below in the "Overall Review" section of this report. Frederic had a good front lat spread which put the muscularity of his shoulders and chest on display and had a wide and thick back which did not lack in conditioning. His most muscular pose was impressive and highlighted the size and conditioning of his shoulders. I definitely would have placed Frederic higher than he did at this contest.
9th: Angel Rangel Vargas
Angel Rangel Vargas was another bodybuilder who I had not heard of before this show. He was ripped, although not as ripped as he could have been with some areas being more off than others, for example, his glutes, hamstrings, and quads. In his rear double biceps pose, his back, shoulders, and arms all looked shredded but the lack of conditioning in his lower body in that pose was clear. I think another week or two of dieting might have done it for him and saw a drastic improvement in his placing.
10th: Noar Ziv
Yet another bodybuilder who I had not heard about before this contest was Noar Ziv. I felt that his placing at this contest had to do with both size and conditioning. His legs were not very big but also could have stood to be brought up in terms of conditioning. Noar displayed a good rear lat spread and a good rear double biceps which are clearly his strong poses. In order for Noar to improve in the professional bodybuilding ranks of the 202-class he will have to pack on some size and dial it in a little better in the future. I look forward to see him continue to improve should bodybuilding be his goal.
Daryl Stafford also competed at this contest and looked alright but may have had some injuries he was dealing with. He also would need more size and conditioning to place higher. He rounded out the linup which was competitive but not as deep as I had seen the 202-class in past shows although the top three all did look very good and I will be happy to see them at the 2010 Mr. Olympia contest.
Overall this was a very good contest and featured outstanding presentations from Ben White, Troy Alves, and Johnnie Jackson in particular. Although some may debate as to what their respective positions should have been in the top three, I believe that most people would agree that they were the three best bodybuilders at the contest as their placings reflected. I look forward to seeing them at the 2010 Mr. Olympia contest in Las Vegas this year and the rest of the bodybuilders at this contest also looked good, despite some coming in off in terms of conditioning or down in terms of size in comparison to previous performances. I felt that some bodybuilders at this show delivered and that even the ones that did not usually had something to offer with very few boring physiques presented at the contest. For not being one of the top four bodybuilding contests, I think that the 2010 Tampa Bay Pro delivered the goods. The contest also displayed a strong 202 class although I would say that my personal take on this category was not as equivalent to the judging decisions for the contest as the open class. Needless to say, three very good 202 bodybuilders are now qualified to compete in the 202 class at the 2010 Mr. Olympia and I look forward to seeing them there.
