MR. OLYMPIA CHALLENGE ROUND - 2004!

This article is a follow up to my previous article MAJOR FLAWS OF THE 2004 MR. OLYMPIA CHALLENGE ROUND where I will include photographs to try to make my previous report more clear.

GUNTER SCHLIERKAMP

Overall, I didn't have too many complaints about Gunter's losses - he looks blocky in his abs and thigh pose and generally didn't look as good as the other bodybuilders in the poses. However, he should have won the side chest pose against Gustavo Badell, if for no other reason than the fact that he hit the pose PROPERLY. Forget about who looked better - Gunter did the pose in accordance with the IFBB rulebook while Gustavo did not. For that reason alone, I feel Gunter should have been awarded the win in that pose. If a bodybuilder doesn't follow the rulebook, a disqualification should naturally be in order.

MARKUS RUHL

I was not disappointed with Markus Ruhl's wins and losses overall, except for his loss in the side chest pose to Jay Cutler - Markus' chest is bigger, thicker, and in better condition than that of Jay's. As well, in that particular pose, the majority of Markus' flaws are hidden or minimized. Exactly what does Jay have over Markus in this pose? Other than hype that is. Don't get me wrong, Jay is an excellent bodybuilder, but all too often in the IFBB, placement in competition is given on name recognition. Objectively, I believe a VERY strong argument can be made that Markus beats Jay in this pose. The most muscular between Markus and Ronnie Coleman were very close, but I would have to give Ronnie the edge on that one for his superior conditioning. Ronnie's arms in particular, were extremely freaky. Other than that, that pose was tight between the two of them, as Triple H pointed out.

GUSTAVO BADELL

Gustavo Badell looked incredible at the 2004 Mr. Olympia Contest - there's no question about that. But because he hit the side chest pose improperly, I feel he should have been disqualified for it. Gunter hit the pose properly, and additionally, Gunter's side chest pose is among the best in the sport of bodybuilding. As good as Gustavo looked doing his "front chest" variation of the pose, he should not have won. Also, Gustavo lost the abs and thigh, which was debatable, but as Ronnie said, just a matter of "apples and oranges."

DEXTER JACKSON

Dexter Jackson was the only person to have gone down in placing after the challenge round - Gustavo Badell ended up in third. There were a few problems I had with this - one question: why did Dexter beat Markus Ruhl in the abs and thigh, then subsequently lose to Ronnie Coleman? They say Ronnie beat Dexter because Ronnie has huge quads and huge hanging lats. But doesn't MARKUS?? If you want to award sheer size in a bodybuilding contest - so be it. But it's extremely inconsistent if you award size on one hand and then shape and symmetry on another, BOTH in the same show. It reminds me of the 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic, where the contest was judged equally as inconsistently. Other than that, I felt Dexter's wins and losses were appropriate.

JAY CUTLER

Jay Cutler had it easy. He got to see what everyone else challenged him to, and he knew to use the same challenges that he previously won, and ended up winning every challenge. As I said, I wasn't particularly in favour of Jay winning the side chest challenge to Markus Ruhl, but I suppose that is debatable. In my opinion, Jay lacks the thickness, density, and conditioning that Ruhl has in that pose, so I would give the win to Jay.

RONNIE COLEMAN

Ronnie kicked everyone's ass when it was his turn to pose. Some say it was close between him Jay Cutler in the rear lat spread, but I would disagree. While Jay has enormous width in that pose, he lacks the density, details and conditioning that Ronnie has, so Ronnie is the clear victor. The only other pose which was close in my mind was the most muscular pose between Ronnie and Markus Ruhl - in that case, I think Ronnie wins due to his incredible conditioning - something which Markus has been drastically improving in recent years, but still not up to the level of Ronnie's.
