Another Reason To Drink Eight Glasses Of Pure Water A Day
Dr. Earl Mindell's Wellness Update
Among American men, bladder cancer is the fourth leading type of cancer, and causes nearly 12,000 deaths every year. A study in the May 1999 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine reveals what I had already suspected: that drinking plenty of water reduces the risk of bladder cancer. Men who drank more than ten eight-ounce cups of fluid per day had a 49 percent lower risk of bladder cancer than men who drank less than five cups a day.
Why the discrepancy in cancer rates? Urinating less means that urine sits in the bladder for extended periods. My best guess is that the faster fluid passes out of the bladder, the less time carcinogens have to do their dirty work on the organ. Any carcinogenic wastes in the urine would be diluted by a high fluid intake, as well. Go ahead and get that glass of clean, pure, filtered water...we'll wait!
